Joseph’s
and his companions’ suffering in Liberty Jail during the four months of winter
of 1838-39 (December through April) was unspeakable. The dungeon-like
conditions with the worst of food, little light, stinking filth, and extreme
cold were a trial that is nearly impossible to comprehend. Yet, Joseph was
humbled and strengthened in his afflictions to the point where the dungeon
became a temple in which the Spirit of the Lord came to him, comforting and
instructing him at a deepened level. The voice of the Lord said:
7 My son, peace be unto
thy soul; thine adversity and thine afflictions shall be but a small moment;
8 And then, if thou
endure it well, God shall exalt thee on high; thou shalt triumph over all thy
foes.
