Section 71

Verily this is a mission for a season, which I give unto you.

Joseph and Sidney were called by the Lord to spend an unspecified number of days preaching the gospel in the vicinity where they lived.  For us, we too are asked to perform, “for a season” the duties prescribed by the Lord.  Sometimes the mission is to be a good neighbor; other times we are to zero in on specific individuals or tasks.  Right now, Jean and I have been asked to help a group of about 50 BYU students draw closer to the Savior.  Our weekly classes and Sunday visits to the wards are how this is to be done.  The season that was specified was 5 years.  We have not been asked to stay in a calling this long before and we are struggling to find a rhythm and a reason.  We must be willing to walk with faith, but we also need to keep our leaders informed regarding our challenges and feelings.  They must understand us before they can appropriately minister to our needs. Nevertheless, the humbling of soul that takes place as we try to do things that are beyond ourselves, can lead to refinement and character growth.  Creative responses to stress, rather than the usual flight or fight reactions, bring us satisfaction and a measure of joy, especially when we feel the Spirit guiding us in pursuits that are virtuous, lovely, or praiseworthy.
