One
of the sweetest memories I have from the time I was a bishop was when I was
blessed to administer relief to those who were in financial need in the
ward. One single sister could not pay
her utilities and needed medications, another sister could not pay for needed
car repair and did not have enough money to pay for food for her family. A father asked me to pay his mortgage until
he found a new job. I was authorized as
the bishop to pay for these needs from the ward fast offering funds. Fast
offerings are paid by ward members who fast 2 meals and take the money they
would have used for the food and donate it to the fast offering fund. Many members pay much, much more than this
amount through the pure generosity of their hearts—and no one knows about it
except the bishop and the Lord. I paid
bills of hundreds and even thousands of dollars for the poor or needy in my
ward and never had to ask the stake for additional funds. This is happening around the world as the
Lord cares for the needs of His people. Think of it, this is one of the
miracles of our day.
6 And the storehouse
shall be kept by the consecrations of the church; and widows and orphans shall
be provided for, as also the poor.
